  • Designed and built by us at Crake Trees. The Shepherds Hut is based on traditional huts that were taken into the fields of large sheep farms of England in the 19th century. The shepherd lived in his hut during the lambing season, they were compact and perfectly designed for a self sufficient life during the early springtime. Our Shepherds Hut is pulled down through the Garth to its summer resting place overlooking the pond, with tremendous views right over the farm, meadows of ancient grass, fields of growing barley and young danish red bulls grazing the summer pastures. The Pennines are in the distance with the Eden valley stretching right up to the Scottish border.
  • The hut is made from steel and wood on a cantilevered base, clad in galvanised steel with plenty of insulation, even under the floor. There is a small verandah to perch on with a glass of something while you watch the world go by... maybe a pheasent, a couple of hares in the pasture, or a tawny owl as it gets towards night.
  • Inside, all is cosy, slightly scandinavian, pale washed boarding, an oak floor, tiny wood stove thats super efficient and a stable door so you can really enjoy the view. A wonderfully comfy oak bed, plenty of candles and a lantern to light your path up to the 'facilities'. You will have the use of a lovely warm shower room and toilet. With a fridge, t.v., plenty of local guide books and magazines, a kettle (very important) and space to dry boots and jackets after you have explored the paths that strike out in every direction from the courtyard.
  • A Breakfast Basket is brought to the Hut each morning. Or as an extra , full English breakfast can be taken in the farmhouse.

Our Breakfasts

Folks always seem to remember their breakfast at Crake Trees Manor.

To start with, the oak side table is spread with good things from the kitchen. Home-made or locally produced if possible. My own granola and muesli, fruit salads, prunes steeped in green tea, and natural set yoghurt and a choice of cereals. Then on to a shared Farmhouse Platter of home cured bacon, cumberland sausage with bitter apple, roasted tomato, field mushrooms and local farm eggs.

If you would prefer a veggie alternative? eggs coddled, scrambled or poached. Baked mushrooms with my own garden herbs, or, a popular choice, with European visitors, fried Hallumi with thyme baked tomatoes. Bread, usually homemade and sliced wholemeal for toast. Some local marmalade and fruity jellies.
