Stay in a Shepherds Hut

shepherd1hut2hut stove

A new venture for 2010 at Crake Trees Manor. Just right for you romantics and folks of adventurous spirit. Sleep out under the stars down by the pond in our Shepherd’s Hut.

Designed and built by us, based on the very traditional huts that were taken into the fields of large sheep farms of England in the 19th century. The shepherd lived in his hut during the lambing season, they were compact and perfectly designed for a self sufficient life during the early springtime.

Our Shepherds Hut is pulled down through the Garth to its summer resting place overlooking the pond, with tremendous views right over the farm, meadows of ancient grass, fields of growing barley and young danish red bulls grazing the summer pastures. The Pennines are in the distance with the Eden valley stretching right up to the Scottish border.

•With a sprung coach-built frame the hut is super insulated, under traditional galvanised cladding. The inside is lined with pine boarding and a solid local Oak floor.
•The half door opens out onto a veranda, just right for perching on with a beer or a mug of tea, first thing in the morning.
•A tiny wood stove is ready to light if the weather is a bit dodgy. We have slept in the hut just before Christmas with 4 ins of snow and minus 17 degrees outside. It’s just wonderful.
•Candles light the hut, with rechargeable lanterns and a windup torch for the short walk back to the shower room.
•A lovely hand built bed with a deluxe Sealy mattress, nice white cotton bedding, natural duvet and vintage crochet throws
•A warm shower room and toilet with towels of course.
• After taking one of the circular walks that head out in all directions right from the yard, make some tea and suchlike ·in the small kitchen.
• Breakfast is taken in the farmhouse, or on warm sunny mornings sit outside and have a breakfast basket brought down to the hut.
• One night in the Shepherds Hut can be ‘just the ticket’ but after two nights or more you may find it difficult to leave!
