The Farm Kitchen

Eating, drinking and enjoying local food is a very important part of making your stay special at Crake Trees Manor

Farm kitchen and The Raven Bar

During the summer of 2021 we started a Pop Up Pizza cafe on the farm. Cooked on our Morso wood fired Pizza oven, it was a great success.

Food shopping locally

There’s no need to shop before arrival as we have lots of special local stores, just off the main road or motorway and within 10 minutes of Crake Trees. Stock up just before arrival or take an easy trip out once you are settled in.

Shap Co-op, is a 10 minute drive away and is the best Co-op in the world!

Tebay Services Farmshop, for amazing local food, this novel motorway side farm shop is the place.

Booths at Penrith, we call it the Waitrose of the north, full of delicious food and drink.

J&J Graham Deli’s make delicious hampers that can be delivered to the cottages; afternoon treats, champagne and fudge or Cumberland in a hamper.

Low Howgill Butchers, is where you can buy the farm’s own meat as well as other great local meat produce and the bakery has delicious pies and tarts.

Stephenson’s Grocers, a proper fruit and veg shop, which also happens to sell lovely cheeses and other deli items.

Eat out in CROSBY RAVENSWORTH 15 minutes walk through the fields or by car 3 minutes

The Butchers Arms (01931 715500)
Our Local community owned pub was bought by selling shares to over a hundred local and not so local investors. The hands on tenants Jon and Katie are making a real effort to keep our pub successful. The food is local with a twist, served every day but Monday. Serving good craft beers and decent wine as well as tea and coffee.

Eating out in KINGS MEABURN 5 minutes, the next village north of Maulds Meaburn

The White Horse (CA10 3BU – 01931 714256

We are eagerly waiting for a tenant to enable the pub to reopen . The whole pub has been refurbished.

Eating out in RAVENSTONEDALE 25 minutes though the countryside south east

The Black Swan ( 015396 23204)
A long standing family run pub with a very cosy and traditional style. Now with a new, trendy chef, previously working at The Punch Bowl, Crosthwaite, there is an interesting menu that is completely seasonal, maybe leaning towards a ‘Heston’ influence.

THE M6 Join at TEBAY travelling North 15 mins

The Westmorland Hotel ( 01539 24351 )
The best motorway services in Great Britain also have a hotel on the Northbound Services. Meals are served in the restaurant or by the fire in the bar. All very local food with detailed provenance, served with views out onto the wilds of Shap Fell. We enjoy eating chef Gary’s creations in the relaxed ‘scandi ‘style, with not a glimpse of the motorway rushing past.

Eating out in CLIFTON 25 minutes on the A6 travelling north towards Penrith

The George & Dragon (CA10 2ER – 01768 865381)
Rejuvenated pub taken back in hand by the Lowther family. Usually busy bar, and large restaurant area. An open kitchen using produce from the estate for modern pub food, all flagged floors, smoky fires and friendly chaos. Seems to be sorting its self out after a mediocre couple of years.

Also its sister Hotel, Askham Hall, ( 01931 712350 ) This is our choice for a really special night out when you can justify the £65.00 tasting menu.

Eating out in SKELTON 35 minutes north

Dog and Gun (CA11 9SE 017684 84301)
A drive out through villages going north beyond Penrith is a treat in itself. We love the food, non traditional, but very local. No alterations since the young family took over except the menu. A great example of the resurrection of a village pub.

Eating out in PENRITH 25 minutes north

The Lounge ( CA11 74Y – 01768 866395 )
Popular with local people of all ages. This busy bar, open all day and evening, is run with precision by The Bowman (of horse driving/ scrap metal fame) family. Tuck into speedy tapas style dishes whilst you enjoy people watching with a continuous beating retro sound track.

DURING THE DAY Coffee stops and lunch time eating

Askham Hall Garden Café
Lovely fresh made salads from garden produce and consistently good cakes. They also fire up the outside Pizza Oven at lunch time. Sit outside in the kitchen garden or inside in the byre.

Shap Chippy at Shap
Our local Fish and Chip Café is open at lunch times and early evenings. Great after a swim in the village open air swimming pool.

GreenWheat Florist and Fika
Brunswick Road Penrith. Also Pop Up restaurant nights with chef Lee. Our daughter Laura recently opened this modern florists with coffee shop ( Fika is Swedish for coffee with something good to eat and a chat!) Great for a coffee stop or lunch of homemade soup and scrumptious baguettes. Watch the world go by and Laura at work…very relaxing.

The Mill Yard Café. Morland
This café has been a popular meeting place for locals that lunch and walkers for many years. A sofa by the fire or catch the sun in the courtyard, then explore Morland House gardens next door. Saturday night in summer are informal Tapas nights.
